Rooibos comes from the South African red bush and is not a tea plant in the traditional sense. Botanically, Aspalathus linearis does not belong to the tea plant genus Camellia Sinensis , but to the legume family. Rooibos is made from the leaves and stems of the plant and, after harvest, is dried directly under the bright African sun.
Rooibos only grows in the Zederberg region, 200 kilometers north of Cape Town. Rooibos is the national drink in South Africa. The word "rooibos" in the national language Afrikaans is made up of the words "rooi" and "bos", which means "red bush". It got its name from its bright brick-red color.
The bush is perfectly adapted to the barren and sandy soils of the area, as well as to the dry and warm climate. The cultivation of this valuable natural product is an important economic sector for the west of the country.
Rooibos - or red bush, as we also call it - is known for its mild, slightly sweet and gently earthy taste. The full-bodied infusion can also be refined with milk and honey.
It also contains many healthy minerals and antioxidants, such as aspalathin, which is said to help protect the body from damage caused by free radicals.
Rooibos is naturally caffeine-free and contains very few tannins. This makes it a popular everyday drink that can also be enjoyed in the evening. It is a sweet and healthy alternative for children and perfect for expectant and breastfeeding mothers. 😃
