China is the cradle of tea. Since green tea was discovered in the Middle Kingdom almost 5,000 years ago, drinking tea has been firmly rooted in everyday life across the entire Asian continent.
The processing of tea leaves in China is very imaginative and rich in tradition, although great importance is still placed on handcrafting for some varieties.
Since green tea from China contains few grassy notes, we recommend it to green tea beginners, among others. However, due to the millennia-old tradition, green tea professionals will also get their money's worth with our Chinese varieties!
Variety: There is a wide range of Chinese green tea varieties: LONG JING, GUNPOWDER TEMPLE OF HEAVEN or the flower-flavored JOY OF JASMINE to name a few. Each variety has its own unique taste, aroma and appearance.
Delicate flavors: Chinese green tea often has more delicate flavors than Japanese green tea and can have floral, fruity or nutty notes. The quality of Chinese green tea depends greatly on the care taken in producing and growing the tea leaves.
Health benefits: Chinese and Japanese green tea are valued for their high antioxidant content, especially epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). This antioxidant is said to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and cancer, as well as strengthen the immune system.
Preparation: Chinese green tea is usually brewed in smaller doses than Japanese green tea. It is often brewed in a gaiwan (porcelain cup with a lid). Depending on the quality, the varieties can be brewed at least twice to fully exploit their taste and aromas.
