Genmaicha was originally invented by farmers. This trick allowed them to enjoy the coveted luxury product. As a positive side effect, they discovered that it curbed their hunger in the afternoon.
For this reason and because of its low caffeine content, Genmaicha is still widely consumed in Japan today.
